- Window glass performs miserably when it comes to preventing energy losses.
- Even double pane, air tight windows (and glass doors) are extremely good at letting energy pass through in all three heat transfer methods (radiant, convection, conduction).
- Significant improvements in room comfort and energy use are realized when thermally excellent window shades are installed and used.

A true thermal window shade has all the following characteristics:
1. FITS TIGHTLY, with no air gaps, to the window edges and especially at the top and bottom sills to prevent hot or cold air flow off the glass and into the room.
2. AIR IMPERVIOUS layer to prevent flowing air transfer through the shade.
3. BLOCKS RADIANT HEAT using metalic coated layer (think emergency space blanket)
4. TRAPS A LAYER OF STILL AIR in a quilt-like batting.
Interior Spaces by Gregg Miller manufactures and sells a superior product that performs fantastically well as a thermal shade for windows and glass doors. It opens and closes easily and is very attractive. Watch the 10 second video to see how it functions in a typical window installation.
